Our students land internships with government agencies, contractors, engineering, and biotech companies as well as medical research facilities. To take advantage of these opportunities, apply early. Turn in your application in the fall for the following summer. Some of the many opportunities:


This program assists biomedical engineering students who have completed their junior year of college. Rising senior bioengineering students participate in biomedical research projects under the mentorship of scientists in National Institutes of Health (NIH) laboratories in Bethesda, Maryland.

Several of Mason's bioengineering students have received this prestigious scholarship which provides awards that include academic assistance (up to $9,500 per year) for two years of full-time study and a 10-week, full-time paid ($700/week) internship at a NOAA facility during the summer.


Participate in faculty-mentored summer research at MIT in the science and biotechnology areas. If you are an undergraduate who meets the program eligibility requirements, no prior research experience is required. As an Amgen scholar, you will conduct research, analyze data, present research results, network with other undergraduates with similar research interests, and develop working relationships with MIT faculty mentors and other research staff.


This program offers Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program for nine weeks in the summer. The NU-Materials Research Science and Engineering Center is an interdisciplinary program focused on multi-functional nanoscale material structures. More than 30 faculty from seven different departments are involved.


This interactive Astronomy Data Analysis on NASA missions internship program combines science, technology, engineering, and mathematics learning experience. We encourage students interested in STEM-related research to join us this summer. Students who participate in the program will study astronomy and space sciences research projects and course work and have the opportunity to explore the universe by remotely controlling the telescope from George Mason University Observatory. We will provide several evening space observation sessions during the internship program. Besides virtual tours of GMU Department of Physics and Astronomy and George Mason University Observatory, students will also have the opportunity to participate in panels with exoplanet and astronomy experts from NASA and around the world.


Separate from "Gov School," but with many similar benefits, the Governor's Foreign Language Academies are also excellent, inexpensive opportunities for elite VA students. SATURDAY PROGRAMS (Many with Virtual Offerings) Did you know that there are special Saturday programs offered for gifted students during the school year by the College of William and Mary and the University of Virginia? Check to see if they are virtual or in-person: W&M's Saturday Enrichment Program has a variety of opportunities which are updated each semester. Look early to be sure to meet application deadlines. The SEP at UVA is usually for students in elementary school, but many of their programs have been shifted to older age groups since 2020. General Lists of Summer Programs The Virginia Association for the Gifted publishes an annual list of summer enrichment opportunities in the state and also maintains a Summer Opportunities page with links to that list and many other Resources for Students. The College Lists Wiki for Summer Programs - General has a large list of databases and links. Hoagies Gifted website's list of Virginia Summer Programs has some familiar and some more obscure options.


Virginia Space Coast Scholars (VSCS) - Online course for 10th grade students focusing on missions flown or managed by NASA Wallops Flight Facility on Virginia's Eastern Shore, with a week-long summer academy program at NASA Wallops Flight Facility.


Virginia Earth System Science Scholars (VESSS) - This interactive online earth system science course for 11th and 12th grade students features NASA scientific research and data. Students can earn up to five dual enrollment college credits and can also be selected to attend a summer academy program at NASA Langley Research Center.


The Army Educational Outreach program apprenticeships provide a unique opportunity for high school and undergraduate students to conduct real-world, Army-sponsored research alongside scientists and engineers in world-class facilities. They inspire students to pursue further education and careers in STEM. Visit the Army Educational Outreach program website for more information. A brief description of each program is included below.


A commuter summer STEM program that places talented high school students from groups historically under-represented and under-served in STEM. Research apprenticeships take place at universities. REAP apprentices work on a hands-on research project under the direct supervision of a mentor.


A commuter summer STEM program, open to current high school juniors and seniors with an authentic science and engineering research experience alongside university researchers sponsored by the Army Research Office. Through this summer commuter program, students will develop skills in critical science and engineering research areas.


A commuter summer program that matches practicing Department of Defense (DOD) scientists with talented high school students creating a direct mentor-student relationship. SEAP participants receive first-hand research experience and exposure to DOD laboratories.


This introductory course is designed for all students in their first year of Air Force JROTC. Units taught include the heritage of flight, development of air power, contemporary aviation, and the aerospace environment, Leadership studies include Air Force customs and courtesies, cadet corps activities, study habits, time management, communication skills, and leadership and management studies. Extracurricular activities include Drill Team/Color Guard. Cadets also participate in parades, summer leadership schools, drill team competitions, military balls, honorary academic groups, and other community activities. Students planning to enroll in JROTC programs must meet program entry requirements.


Students will demonstrate mastery of media production knowledge and skills. They will function as media producers by creating original productions as they develop and market programs for target audiences. Students will assemble a professional digital portfolio to advance post-secondary and career goals. They will investigate the dynamic media production industry and identify opportunities for real-world experiences (e.g. internship, job shadowing). Students will research post-secondary opportunities and formulate strategies for both college and career success.


The Prince William Project SEARCH is a collaborative effort between PWCS, DARS, and Didlake Inc. The Project SEARCH Transition-to-Work Program is a unique, business-led, one-year employment preparation program that takes place entirely at the workplace. Total workplace immersion facilitates a seamless combination of classroom instruction, career exploration, and hands-on training through worksite internships. Students participate in three 10-12-week unpaid internships at the Novant UVA Health Systems, Prince William Medical Center.


Senior mechanical engineering major Sidney Boakye was named a Matthew Isakowitz Fellow. The Isakowitz fellowship aims to immerse students in commercial spaceflight through mentorship, summer internships, and networking.

FCPS School Counseling Services and Go Overseas invite you to attend the 2023 Gap Year Fair to learn about the growing array of gap year opportunities. The fair will provide students with broad exposure to gap year programs that emphasize experiential education and personal growth through travel, language immersion, directed study, outdoor adventure, community service, and internships.

As part of our student programs, it is presently planned that MITRE's Nationwide High School Student Program will be offering to high school students paid positions in these technical areas during summer 2023. As a student researcher, you will join and collaborate with our team of expert mentors who are motivated to help you realize your maximum potential. To qualify for these paid, 8-week summer 2023 research positions, students will need to be current freshmen through current seniors in high school during the 2022-23 academic year.
